The females can lay up to about four million eggs, who, once hatched, are small transparent larvae who float on the ocean’s currents for about 12 months (The Nature Conservatory). These eels spawn only in the Sargasso Sea, a warm region of water located in the southeast of the Atlantic Ocean. What we do know is that adult eels migrate downstream to the ocean by using what is thought to be the Earth’s magnetism and their homing abilities. Little is known about the spawning of the American eel, as no one has witnessed it. The American eel is a catadromous species, meaning they spawn in saltwater but spend most of their lives in freshwater (Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife). Males can get about 18 inches long while females are larger, averaging about 36 inches. They will then turn a black and silver or bronze eel during their reproductive phase. Adult American eels can have a wide color range, most being brown with yellow on the sides. These eels are very muscular and secrete a slime that creates a protective mucus layer around their body. They have short, round pectoral fins on the side of their body and a mouth filled with very small teeth. They are a prey species to larger fish, like bass, reptiles, some mammals, and fish-eating birds.Īdults have a long, cylindrical snake-like body with a single dorsal fin running along their body. Other sources indicate that it has always been a somewhat redundant phrase meaning an outcry and cry, though such "redundancy" is a feature of the legal doublet. It is possible that the term is an Anglicization via Anglo-French of the Latin hutesium et clamor, meaning "a horn and shouting". The oath of office for constables in Tennessee, USA specifically mentions that it is the duty of the constable to sound the hue and cry. Those who raised a hue and cry falsely were themselves guilty of a crime. ![]() It was moreover provided that "the whole hundred … shall be answerable" for the theft or robbery committed, in effect a form of collective punishment. ![]() In the Nordic world the horse was much more than just a transport animal for the living and the dead, it was considered a sacred, spiritual animal and, like a shaman, provided a connection between mortal and mythological beings to the realms of the unconscious and the supernatural. In Old Norse sources the horse is associated with supernatural powers over the elements, fertility and health. In the Íslendingasǫgur, echoes of the role of the horse as a transcendent animal are found, the horse was in fact often associated with the dead and the afterlife, given its ability to predict fate and foretell death. Þórr is the only exception among the gods who walks, does not ride, on Bifröst to Miðgarðr.īoth Grímnismál and Gylfaginning count twelve houses for twelve gods, but only eleven horses: Sleipnir, Glaðr, Gyllir, Glær, Skeiðbrimir, Silfrtoppr, Sinir, Gils, Falhófnir, Gulltoppr and Léttfeti. ![]() This transcendent role is perhaps one of the most important uses of horses in Eddic sources, since so many myths revolve around the interaction of various mythological worlds always separated from each other by fire, water, air or earth.īridges and horses are the main means of connecting these different kingdoms.īifröst, sometimes referred to as a rainbow, is said to burn where the red color shines, the Gylfaginning explains that all Æsir must traverse the asbrú (Bifröst) daily to reach their judgment seats, it is not clear exactly which worlds they are connected by the Bifröst, but Urðr's well is where the gods take their daily advice across the bridge. The horse was seen as a bridge between worlds, the primary form of transportation across the spaces between the living and the dead and beyond the boundaries of reality. To understand Sleipnir's role it is important to understand that the figure of the horse was, in Viking culture, strongly symbolic, playing an important role in religion, rituals and beliefs. In addition to this, Sleipnir is the iconic symbol of the shamanic role that the horse had as a medium between the world of the living and that of the dead. The same color of Sleipnir's mottled gray coat is a mix of black and white, or light and dark, reflecting the many ways a horse could represent both good and evil, light and dark. He was born of the deceiver Loki, who is a male god transformed into a mare, often associated with evil, and of Svaðilfari, a hardworking stallion associated with good intention. Over the centuries, the cult evolved, taking many forms, with its most recent incarnation coming into existence shortly after the rise of Nazism in Germany under the leadership of Johann Schmidt as the scientific branch of the Nazi Schutzstaffel. Ever since his banishment, the cult had been determined to bring him back to Earth to commence a planetary takeover. It was founded in ancient times, formerly as a cult centered around the fanatical worship of Hive, a powerful Inhuman that was exiled to the planet Maveth by ancient Inhumans. Abraham Riesman, “That Time Captain America Said ‘Hail Hydra’ and Geekdom Imploded,” Vulture, last modified April, 28 2019. This paper provides a new lens to examine the history of white nationalism in the United States while building on the current body of scholarship arguing for the importance of comic books as a historical source. ![]() Through a comparative analysis of these two storylines, this paper examines the ways in which the Captain America comic books have reflected the shift in white nationalist movements from a largely condemned movement to a viable political force. While Hydra and the National Force are comparable villains, the lenses through which the writers of both storylines present them reveal how views of white nationalism have changed in the United States. In 1979, Captain America was briefly brainwashed into joining the National Force, an organization which acted as a clear allegory for the various white nationalist movements gaining power in the United States at the time. However, this moment was not the first time that Captain America had joined the other side. Many claimed that by aligning Captain America with Hydra author Nick Spencer disregarded the character’s origin as an anti-Nazi propaganda piece and later history as a defender of American values, and gave fuel to the growing Alt-Right movement in the United States. ![]() The moment incited a riot not only among comic book super fans, but casual onlookers as well. In 2016, Captain America brought comic books to the forefront of national discussion with a single phrase: “Hail Hydra.” These two words proclaimed Captain America’s allegiance to Hydra, one of Marvel Comics most recognizable villains which has historically been used as an allegory for the Nazi Party. ![]() ![]() ![]() For product and price related enquiries please.
